Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Beto O'Rourke received a greater percentage of itemized contributions from Texans than Republican rival Ted Cruz did, according to an American-Statesman analysis of the candidates' campaign filings for the third quarter.

But Cruz, the inferior U.S. senator from Texas seeking a 2nd term, raised a greater percentage of his coin from Texans than did O'Rourke, a three-term congressman from El Paso.

The O'Rourke campaign vastly outspent the Cruz entrada during July, Baronial and September — $29.ii million to $nine.6 one thousand thousand — according to the reports that were due midnight Mon. O'Rourke's entrada reported $22.nine million in cash on manus; the Cruz campaign reported $xi.three million in cash on manus.

O'Rourke's $38.one million in fundraising in the third quarter was the largest past whatsoever U.S. Senate candidate ever in a single quarter. The Ted Cruz for Senate committee raised $11.six 1000000 in the same menstruation, augmented by nearly $2 million in receipts from the separate Ted Cruz Victory Committee.

Nether federal campaign finance rules, campaigns must provide the name, accost and occupation of donors who, in ane or several contributions, give a total of more than $200 to a candidate during an election campaign cycle. The Statesman assay found that $20 million of O'Rourke'due south third quarter total came from individuals who exceeded the $200 threshold. Of that amount, 56.5 percent, or $11.five million, came in itemized contributions from Texas. Of those 125,839 itemized contributions, 86,163, or 68.v percent, came from Texas.

Cruz raised $10.2 million from individuals, as opposed to political committees, and, of that full, $6.1 meg were itemized contributions. Nearly $four million of that total, or 64.7 percentage, was from Texas. Of Cruz'southward 36,074 itemized contributions, about twenty,000, or 55.two percent, were from Texas.

Out-of-country donors

Cruz has made an issue of where O'Rourke is getting his money, suggesting that the Democrat's agenda warms the hearts and wins the dollars of folks in deep blueish places similar Massachusetts, New York and California, at the expense of Texans and conservative Texas values. But, considering of its sheer size, California was the second-biggest habitation to donors to both campaigns, though O'Rourke raised a lot more in that location — $two.vii million in eleven,217 contributions, to Cruz's $355,000 in two,768 contributions.

O'Rourke raised $one.half dozen million in 5,229 itemized contributions from New York; Cruz raised $118,000 in one,406 contributions from the Empire Land.

In their receipt of out-of-state itemized contributions, O'Rourke out-raised Cruz in 35 states and the District of Columbia. Cruz out-raised O'Rourke in 15 states, 14 of which voted for Trump in 2016 — Alabama, Georgia, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Mississippi, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee and Wisconsin. The only Clinton state that gave more to Cruz than O'Rourke is Nevada.

But, O'Rourke can avowal that he received nearly iii times as much money in itemized contributions from Texans as Cruz did.

O'Rourke'southward biggest expenses were $9.ix million for TV, cable and radio advertizing, and $7.three million for digital advertisement.

Nearly half of Cruz's spending — 45.5 percentage — went to advertising in all media, but in dollars, that was but nearly a quarter of what O'Rourke invested in advertisement.

O'Rourke's payroll was $1.6 meg. Cruz's payroll for the same three months was $232,000, plus a $15,000 intern stipend.

Cruz leading in polls

Cruz leads in recent polls of probable voters, including a Quinnipiac University Poll released last week that had Cruz alee past 9 points, the same margin as in its September survey. A new CNN poll conducted by SSRS found Cruz leading O'Rourke by 7 points among likely voters — 52 per centum to 45 percent.

The CNN survey found that just 9 pct of probable Texas voters say there's a hazard they could modify their heed, with O'Rourke voters slightly more sure of their choice.

O'Rourke is depending on a surge in turnout that volition expand the electorate in means that benefit his campaign and defy past experience and expectations.

A heavy focus in the remaining days before the election will be gearing up a ground game to get out the vote. Cruz tin can rely on a state-of-the-fine art Republican effort led by the very well-financed entrada of Gov. Greg Abbott.

The O'Rourke campaign, which donated $815,000 to the Texas Democratic Party in the third quarter, is creating a statewide get-out-the-vote entrada largely on its own.
